Students must develop the skill of document analysis to do well on the Document Based Question on the essay portion of the exam.  The following idea, referred to by the acronym, SOAPS, helps train the students to ask questions about the documents rather than simply accept the information at face value.  We will discuss this approach and then practice the skill by taking documents from one of the text resources.

    What is the subject of this document?   (Title, theme, summary)

  O   What is the Occasion?    This can help you think of outside information

  A   Who is/are the Audience(s)

  P   What was the Purpose?

  S   Who is the Speaker?  (author)

  How?       useful is this document in answering the question?  Explain.

  Teacher steps:    1.  Have students take out a blank piece of paper and write SOAPS at the top.

                           2.  Give the students a DBQ question:

Chapter 26  Evaluate New Deal reforms.  Compare and contrast the programs of the various critics of the New Deal.

                         3.  For each picture, painting, or poster in the chapter complete the SOAPS questions.
