Discussion questions for the sermon People of the Cross Part 1

After your time of worship open class by asking your students the following question.
Opening class discussion question... What is the underground church?
It is not always literally underground but there is a reason it is described as this... why?

The underground church is also called the persecuted church. The Bible says blessed are those who
are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Today, we are going to take some time to center in on the persecuted church
As followers of Christ or "People of the Cross" we live our lives to love God and love people.
One of the ways we fulfill this is by obeying the great commission and going into all the world
to preach the Gospel.

Remembering and responding to the persecuted church around the world is a key element to fulfilling
the great commission. Lets take the next 30 minutes to watch a teaching segment by Pastor Paul on
remembering the persecuted church and understanding what we can respond to it.

Start at 4:30 go to 28:00
Then pick back up at 38:00 to 44:00

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS BELOW

According to Pastor Paul, what are the four ways we should respond to missions and the persecuted church?

Recall the testimony of the missionary who was guarded by 26 angles that looked like soldiers.
While helping a person in the jungle a group of people planned to attack him but said their were
26 guards protecting the missionary. But the missionary said he was alone. After coming back home
to America, he discovered that 26 people felt an urge to pray for him during the exact hour he was in
danger of attack.

How does this testimony help us understand the power of prayer?
In what ways does it show us how we can help the persecuted church and the
spread of the Gospel?

Have you ever had an experience where you felt an urge to stop and pray for someone or just to
stop and pray in general? If so, please share your experience.
When we feel like we should pray but we are not sure what to specifically pray for,
what can we do?

We can be mission minded in our daily lives by allowing the love of God to compel
us to share the Gospel throughout our day to day lives.
Paul quoted a missionary name Hudson Martin,
He said that "The spirit of Christ is the Spirit of mission... the closer we get to Christ
the more intensely missionary we become"

Why do you think about this quote. Why would getting closer to God stir our hearts to be more mission minded?

Last,  Pastor Paul mentioned that being "People of the Cross" means to daily take up our cross and follow Christ.
In this season of your life as a student, what does it mean for you to take up your cross?
