How Should Christians Engage the Culture?          Lesson 7

Review from last week
1.  What is pop culture?

2. How should Christians create culture? With God's image in mind.  Creating culture is how we relate to the world God gave us?

3.  Seed thought:

5. What is the cultural mandate?  we are to fill, form and create new things, as well as influence existing culture.

6.  How?  by doing the right thing,  through the power of the one who has conquered sin and death.

We talked last time about how culture bears the brokenness of the Fall but part of God's redemptive plan is to restore things to what they were ment to be.

Students write down the blue questions and the red answers.

1. Remember the fall? God did give His good creation to care for, tend, and form.

2. How do Christians effect culture? Human culture should be better because Christians are in it.  (We are the salt of the earth)

3.  What are some good things in culture worth celebrating?  family, worship, schools

4.  What are some cultural creations that have been preserved for us?  Shakespear, Mona Lisa, architecture, music.

5.  What are some things that God has put in your life for you to take care of ?  family, pets, job, others I come in contact with

Seed thought:  As cultivators of culture, we should promote aspects of the culture that are beautiful, skillfully done, truthful, and helpful.

5. What is the cultural mandate?  we are to fill, form and create new things, as well as influence existing culture.

6.  How?  by doing the right thing,  through the power of the one who has conquered sin and death.

Big Question:If culture can become broken because of the fall can people become broken too? Yes!

What do you think the term “broken people” means?

People with a misinformed perception of life/People who are not led by the Spirit

People who are lost

SPECIFIC EXAMPLE: A person who feels like they are a woman trapped in a man’s body…. Without the Spirit and the Word of God, this person will suffer a serious identity crisis and may even get a sex change.

1 This may seem like an extreme example of a ‘’broken person” but acceptance of transgender lifestyle is being pushed in pop culture right now.

2 The brokenness and identity crisis of this person is a direct effect of the fall. The fall released a curse of mankind and all of the earth. A spirit of infirmity, alcoholism, anorexia, depression, homosexuality, etc can attack itself to anyone, even a young child.

As Christians who know truth, we must hold to the truth! We must not wavier even though we feel the pressure of society to see things their way.

1 The TRUTH is that no demonic attack whether it be depression, confused sexuality, drug addiction etc no attack is too big for God to set someone free from! One word from God can change everything!! God turned Saul, a Christian killer, into Paul, the author of most the New Testament!

What are some examples of pop culture tv shows that show the effects of broken people?

GLEE, AWKWARD, 16 AND PREGNANT, KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS, MODERN FAMILY, THE LGBT MOVEMENT, TRANSPARENT

II OTHERS TRY TO CREATE AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE CHRISTIAN CULTURE

Some Christians respond to the darkness of secular culture by in various degrees breaking entirely away from secular culture. What are some extreme ways Christians break away and create their own culture?

what are some extreme examples?

 The Amish community/ Pentecostal Holiness/ Mennonites/

What are some more subtle ways?

 IS THERE A MIDDLE GROUND?

Should Christians just be on the defense when it comes to culture?

Absolutely not!

We are called to both cultivate and create culture

A GOAL WE SHOULD HAVE AS CHRISTIANS IS TO ENGAGE THE CULTURE BY UNDERSTANDING THE EFFECTS OF THE FALL AND POINTING THE WAY TO REDEMPTION

TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH THE WORLD, WE MUST FIRST SEEK TO UNDERSTAND WHERE THEY ARE COMING FROM.

LETS WATCH THE 180 VIDEO AND SEE HOW THESE CHRISTIANS INVADE CULTURE AND INFLUENCE THE HEARTS OF THE LOST TO SEE ISSUES AS CHRSIST SEES THEM.

Why do we need to know about culture?

1.  To let others know what is our perspective.

2.  Helps to guide others toward heaven

3.  then we begin to make the right decisions and form the appropriate responses to questions on abortion, same-sex marriage, cloning, stem-cell research and even media choices. Because, in the end, the truth does set us free.  It is our decisions and actions that reveal what we really believe.

Small Group Discussion

When the devil tempted Adam and Eve in the garden, he said that they would know good and evil… What does it mean to know good and evil? Does it just mean right from wrong or is there more to it? Genesis 3

How does the fall human nature experience of being infected by evil bring meaning to the broken state of secular culture?

What are things we should seek to understand about the lost or “broken people” that can help us better engage with them?

Without God there is no good. The Bible says that every good and perfect gift comes from above. The Bible also says that there is no wisdom outside the counsel of God. Thus any and all truly good principles that non-believers hold to actually come from God. What are some some common ground God given truths that the present culture still believes in? How might we highlight these truths to lead them to the ultimate truth of the Gospel?

For example, it is true that God loves all people including no matter what sins hold them captive… however, the ultimate truth is that surrendering oneself  Christ is the only way to have true freedom.
