At the end of WW II  Korea was divided along the 38th parallel line.  North Korea was Communist and South Korea was free.

1. Analyze the origins, international alliances, and efforts at containment of Communism.
A. Identify the origins of the Cold War and its foreign and domestic consequences, including confrontations with the


B. Evaluate the United States’ attempts at the containment of Communism including the Truman Doctrine and the involvement of the United Nations in the Korean War .

Causes of the Korean War:

       In 1950   Communist North Korea invaded Free South Korea

   1.  UN sent troops  to defend South Korea.

   2.  North Koreans pushed south as far as Pusan

   3.  Gen. MacArthur made a surprise landing at Inchon

B. Evaluate the United States’ attempts at the containment of Communism including the Truman Doctrine and the involvement of the United Nations in the Korean War .

4.  Mac Arthur wanted to invade China and end communism once and for all in that part of the world.

5.  Truman said no to using nukes
         and fired MacArthur

   Truman Doctrine  a policy of containment,  to keep Communism from spreading and contained.

   6. USSR leader Joseph Stalin dies.

Korean War lasted 3 years .  A truce  (agreement) was signed.
